Artifact Adventures: Seven Magic Mountains

June, 7, 2016

Artifact Adventures is on the road again! Join us a we venture through Nevada to Ojai, Ventura, Los Angeles and San Diego California, over the next three weeks.

Our SUV is packed to the tippy top with my sister, our (combined) 4 children, almost a million suitcases, road snack essentials and electronics to keep the littles at bay during our long travels. We're ready for anything!

Before we hit the road to California, we had to check out a technicolor art installation that a friend had insisted we see, just outside of Las Vegas - Seven Magic Mountains. There it was, right off of Interstate 15, we could see a few pinpoints of brightness glowing like neon anomalies against the neutral colored dryland.

What we found was a rainbow rock formation, created by Ugo Rondinone, and it was spectacular! The creation consists of seven colossal stone forms in various day-glo colors that resemble "hoodoos," also called "tent rocks" and "earth pyramids," which are tall, thin spires of rock that protrude from drainage basins. Co-produced by the Nevada Museum of Art and New York’s Art Production Fund, the installation serves as a critique of Vegas-style reflection while nodding to the area’s historical art past.

Whether you pull over for your next road-trip stop off, or peer out your window from the moving road, this attraction is a fantastic must-see!
